| Aligarh, July 11: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) today condoled the sad demise of former AMU Vice Chancellor, former Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Jammu and Kashmir and Padamshree recipient, Dr Mehmood ur Rehman, who passed away on Saturday after developing a sudden health related complication. The condolence meeting was held at the University Polytechnic Auditorium to pay homage and remember the services and contribution of Dr Mehmood-ur Rehman in the administrative landscape of AMU and other government services. During the meeting, AMU Vice Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor said that in Dr Rahman’s tenure as the Vice Chancellor, he had several meetings with him. “I was the Secretary of Aligarh Muslim University Teachers Association and Dr Rahman met me for suggestions,” said Professor Mansoor adding that he shared a very fruitful relationship with Dr Rahman. Talking about the contribution of Dr Rahman, the AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Masnoor said that it was due to Dr Rahman’s efforts that acres of University land was recovered from land mafia. He added that another very important contribution of Dr Rahman is the establishment of the Dental College in the University, which is successfully running the graduate and post-graduate courses. “Dr Rahman also increased the number of seats for the MBBS course from 100 to 150,” pointed Professor Mansoor. He further said that His Holiness, the Dalai Lama also visited AMU after an invitation from Dr Rahman. “Dr Rahman’s efforts also led to the construction of Bab-e-Syed, Gulistan-e-Syed and construction of a boundary wall around the campus among other numerous contributions” said Prof Mansoor adding that the best tribute to Dr Rahman would be not to patronize the land mafia eyeing university property and people with evil mindset and ill intentions. He also pointed out that Dr Rahman was an affectionate person, who wrote to him after he took charge as the University Vice Chancellor. Professor Mansoor pointed out that he had asked University Executive Council members Professor Naseem Ahmad and Professor Hafiz Iliyas and Dr Tufail to represent AMU during the funeral. While expressing sympathies with Dr Rahman’s bereaved family, Professor Mansoor prayed for peace to the departed soul. “All our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family members of Dr Mehmood-ur Rehman,” said Prof Mansoor. On the occasion, Professor Farhath Ullah Khan (Professor Emeritus) in his message during the meeting said: “We are pained with the sudden demise of Dr Mehmood-ur Rehman. I have worked with him and recall his affection towards his colleagues. His valuable contribution will always be remembered.” He added that Dr Rahman was a recipient of three gold medals during his student days at the Allahabad University. “During his student days, Dr Rahman used to visit Professor Nazeer of the Department of Persian in AMU for his preparations of the Civil Services examinations,” pointed out Prof Khan adding that Dr Rahman wanted to start a school in Aligarh, where students could be trained for appearing in competitive examinations of elite government services. He added that as a civil servant, Dr Rahman is known for his work to remove the socio-economic backwardness of minority communities and his services as the Assistant Commissioner in Anantnag District of Jammu and Kashmir, Sub Divisional Magistrate, Deputy Planning Secretary, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, Development Commissioner, Ladakh and Agriculture Commissioner and Secretary. “He also contributed to the establishment of the Jammu and Kashmir Agriculture University and the Horticulture Processing and Marketing Corporation (HPMC),”said Prof Khan. While reading the condolence note, Professor Javaid Akhter, AMU Registrar said that Dr Rahman was a staunch and undaunted administrator endowed with all qualities of a good human being. He further read that during Dr Rahman’s tenure there was a perfect law and order situation and a very healthy educational environment. “Dr Rahman introduced MSc (Industrial Chemistry) in the University, he established AMU Gas Agency, initiated the construction of Working Women’s Hostel, started the construction of Academic College Guest House and gave the idea of opening of AMU Centres outside Aligarh and accordingly opened two centres—one at Dubai and another at Asansol (West Bengal) which existed during his tenure:” said Professor Akhter while reading the resolution. The resolution further stated that after completing his tenure as the Vice Chancellor, Dr Rahman joined as Secretary, Ministry of Parliamentary affairs, Government of India and after retirement, he got an assignment of Chairman, Bombay Merchantile Cooperative Bank, Mumbai. The Deans, Chairpersons, Directors of various University Faculties, Departments and Centres were present on the occasion.
